The gift of rapping

As I get closer to surgery I keep thinking about my last major surgery several years back. There seems to be several similarities. Kind of the same area of human anatomy and almost exactly the same time of year! Last surgery I ate my first solid food on Thanksgiving. It was so good to be alive I was even grateful for hospital processed turkey loaf.

Back when I lived in Hollywood my appendix burst. I was in severe pain but like most people; we just keep hoping it gets better all on its own. Plus, I had a shoot in the morning with Pastor Tommy. You don’t call in sick on that! I paced around my pad in pain for several hours!

The pain was so bad I was about to call 911 when I had the thought that if I do, I’ll have to walk to the lobby to let them in. I lived on the third floor of a security building. Since I would have to let them in the front door I might as well just walk to the garage and drive myself. So I did! Wait, it gets much better!

After several hours in the emergency room (I once waited 24 hours just to be seen at County USC with a broken wrist) they ran some tests and told me I had food poising. I bought it, heck; I ate donated food at the Dream Center cafeteria that afternoon. It made sense.

I went home and the pain kept getting progressively worse. I could not sit, lay down, stand, walk – it was hell! After about 12 more hours I decide to go back to the hospital. Yup, you guessed it, I drove myself – again! This time I ran up on a curve barley missing a light pole on Sunset Blvd. It was not just a little off course curb slam; I went up a small hill and then back down completely off the road. Dumb in a no dumb zone!

We will fast forward the story past admittance to where they have finally prepped me for surgery. Ahhhhh Demerol! They had me on a gurney in the hall. I don’t know if it was protocol or if the hospital staff was introducing themselves to me on their own. It was a nice distraction. After a few said hello and explained what their jobs were I was approached by a 55 – 65 year old Pilipino man. I forgot his name but he stated he was the assistant surgeon.

He started to wind-up to lead me to the Lord. I thought I would save him some time and energy and told him I was on staff at the Dream Center. Of course, the Dream Center has a large Pilipino ministry and he knew it well. He asked what I did and I responded: “television producer”. I will never forget what happened next.

He then proceeded to tell me he had a gift. That God gave him a gift - the gift of rapping. I thought to myself, “cool, he will wrap all of my innards professionally, he has a gift”. Right then and there, in the middle of the hall with his co-workers watching, this 50 plus Pilipino man, in broken English no less, busts out in the most horrible Christian rap you have ever heard. Even medicated it was painful. Here was a man that was about to cut me open. I could not stop him, heck he might leave his class ring inside me or something even worse. I think he thought that I could get him a contract on TBN – I don’t know. What I do know is that it was probably one of the most hilarious moments in my life.

Interesting quote on forgiveness

A friend lent me a book titled “Forgiving the Unforgivable” by Beverly Flanigan

This is an amazing book and I highly recommend it. As I was about to pick up where I left off last night I found a post-it note inside that reads:

“if you don’t find it hard to forgive it would not be a virtue”

Interesting quote on feeling secure

I don’t know where I found this:

“Security is mostly a superstition. It does not exist in nature, nor do the
children of men as a whole experience it. Avoiding danger is no safer in the
long run than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure or
nothing.” —Helen Keller

Well today I was at the hospital getting pre-reregistered for my surgery. The attending doctor was telling me that I may have to get a shot of morphine in my back. He went on to say that before this happens they will seek my approval. I believe I said something like “you know best”. Then with a weird smirk the doctor said “we are like Grey Hound, just leave the driving to us”!

Have you ever ridden on Grey Hound? Scary!

An exciting month

This month I will be doing some traveling.

Pastor Blunt is amazing and he is always investing in his staff

Nov 1st thru 3rd I am in Palm Springs for a Bob Harrison Increase Event

Nov 7th thru 10th in San Diego for the National Outreach Convention

Then back for Hillsong Untied on Nov 14th

Then I rest for a few days starting Nov 16th at St John’s Mercy Medical Center.

I get to go meet the nurses today. This is all new to me. Most of my hospital stays I was rushed into an emergency room so there was no time to think much less meet anyone. You might want to start praying for the Hospital staff now. They may need it! :)

Hillsong United is coming to COTR

November 14th is going to be wild. To help WOM we are trying something new. We are highlighting a section of our webpage where you can email a link to a promo video we made to invite your friends. Events like these make GREAT outreaches to get people into church who may never visit a regular service.

Jenny Craig should partner with Macy’s

We all know that people in America spend billions every year to lose weight. What I have never seen publicized is the effects weight loss has on the clothing industry.

This last February, after hearing a message on balance from Joyce Meyer, I started to eat right and exercise. The more I got into it – the more I got into it! I was thinking today and this relates to not just weight loss. The more you discipline yourself the easier discipline becomes! Hmmmm!

After a few months I went from a size 40 waist to a size 36. My suits were falling off me so I had to take them to get altered. Crazy expensive! While I was waiting for the tailor to complete the job I was dressing executive casual for church. I went to Macy’s to buy a dressier pair of jeans and took a size 36 to the fitting room. To my shock, they were too big. “It had to be the cut”, I told myself and went and grabbed a size 34. I was blown away – I fit into a 34 waist! Wow! Just a few weeks prior I bought all 36 jeans! Ahhhh!

This last week I was meeting a friend in West County. Since there is a Nordstrom there I decided to go and try on some jeans. Wow, I am now a size 33!

I never planned on this. I bought all 36 jeans, then 34s. Of course, with cold weather coming, all my winter clothes would be crazy falling off me given that I had bought them last year! So this weekend I had to go spend a bunch of money, that I don’t have, and that I would have rather put towards my debt reduction! I now probably even have to get my suits altered again!

Maybe someday one of these weight loss programs like Jenny Craig will partner with a huge retailer like Macy’s. It may make for some good business!

20 minutes with Pastor Tommy Barnett

Me and Pastor TommyFor several years I was blessed to be able to spend a little time with Pastor Tommy Barnett every Friday while taping his segments for Dream Center TV. This past Monday COTR held a banquet to honor our volunteers. Just before dinner started Pastor Tommy and I spent about 20 minutes alone talking, and it was by far the best 20 minutes I have ever spent with him.

We were talking about the Hope Park outreach we are doing and Pastor Tommy made the comment that most of the people downtown STL probably do not even know my past. He then paused, reached his arm over and grabbed my arm and then said “Mark, you are one of the top 5 miracles I have seen in my life”! Yup, I started to cry like a baby, heck my eyes are watering up now just thinking about it.

Pastor Tommy loving on meLast night I was also blessed to spend some time with Mac Gober. We got on the subject of the favor of God and how God has much favor on my life. He has favor on all our lives! The thing is we get so busy running around trying to tackle life that we often forget what God has done for us. I know I know He has favor on my life, but because I so often forget I am grateful for the moments, like my 20 minutes with Pastor Tommy, where God reminds me of His greatness!

The following picture is of the two greatest men I know. Both of whom God has used, and continues to use in powerful way to change my life. I will always be forever grateful to Pastor Blunt and Pastor Barnett for the love and understanding they have shown to me!

Top six perceptions of Christians

In my daily blog reading I found a great post on ThinkChristian.net. Read the entire post here.

Top six perceptions of Christians:
1. Anti-Homosexual – this is toward the person not the deed – 96%
2. Judgmental – 87%
3. Hypocritical – 81%
4. Sheltered
5. Politically Motivated
6. Insecure

As stated on their blog: An important thing to note here is that these perceptions were consistent from both inside and outside the church. 40% of the audience interviewed were from outside the church. Meaning that a big part of where these perceptions are coming from is within the church itself via both conversations and from the pulpit.

How do we change this?

This is a video from the authors of UnChristian about how Christianity is perceived.
