Today’s media – will it get better?

I rarely watch TV after midnight but tonight I happened to do a little channel surfing. After 17 years of living in Hollywood I can honestly say I am fairly open minded, but, I was a little shocked at the frequent use of bad language.

I like to think positive yet I see today’s media getting worse.

This is what I found on the FCC website

the FCC warned broadcasters that, depending on the context, it would consider the “F-Word” and those words (or variants thereof) that are as highly offensive as the “F-Word” to be “profane language” that cannot be broadcast between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m.

What is the “safe harbor”? The “safe harbor” refers to the time period between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., local time. During this time period, a station may air indecent and/or profane material.

Funny use of words naming the time period when profane language can be used as a “Safe Harbor”!

What do you think?

Hi Mark – since I look at everything through the perspective of growing young adults into happy, productive members of society I decided to compare tv ‘safe harbor’ time to times of day that criminals [especially juveniles] commit most offenses.

    research shows:
Violent crimes by juveniles occur most frequently in the hours immediately following the close of school on school days. On nonschool days, the incidence of juvenile violence increases through the afternoon and early evening hours, peaking between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m., 61% of all violent crimes by juveniles occur on school days. In fact, 20% of juvenile violent crime occurs in the 4 hours between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. on school days, while 14% occurs during the standard juvenile curfew hours of 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. Consequently, efforts to reduce juvenile crime after school would appear to have greater potential to decrease a community’s violent crime rate than do juvenile curfews.
Juvenile and adult offenders are most likely to commit a violent crime with a firearm between 9 p.m. and 10 p.m.—although there is also a minor peak in the afterschool hours for juveniles. Over one-quarter (27%) of all violent crime committed by juvenile offenders involving the use of a firearm occurs between 8 p.m. and 11 p.m. For adult offenders, 24% of violent crimes involving the use of a firearm occur between 9 p.m. and 12 p.m.

So, it would appear that most adult and juvenile criminals must be home watching tv during ‘safe harbor’ time to not miss their favorite shows; and, so to cut back on crime in America we would need only to get FCC to expand ‘safe harbor’ time to start 3:oop.m. rather than 10:00p.m.
